Once Shapiro received all of the happy news, he went about the process of trying to choose a school. A major factor in his choice: finances. Shapiro’s motivation for applying to so many colleges was to get the chance to review a variety of financial aid packages. “Part of my decision was comparing some of the different offers that the schools were able to provide my family with,” he said. Shapiro also visited three of the campuses where he got accepted — an experience he found so valuable that he always advises prospective colleges to do it if they can.

Pitched it next to another important print/web publication, and same thing – accepted immediately and handed off to a hack who chopped it up and sent it back. This time, wanting to be published for the first time in this influential newspaper, I fought. We went back and forth with revisions twice. That was fine, but I saw upon googling him that this man cranks out opinion pieces by the dozen, each written in 2 minutes, he edits other peoples’ work as quickly as possible, and if he doesn’t understand a word, he snips it and inserts one that means what he thinks the writer means. He is an assembly-line editor, and he is right where he should be – cranking out 10 articles a day, 5 days a week.

I feel like I’m caught in a whirlpool of “ Amusing Ourselves to Death ,” as author  Neil Postman predicted 30 years ago . In the book, Postman contrasts two dystopian visions of the future. George Orwell’s 1984, where power is expressed directly through Big Brother, oppressively restricting people’s freedoms. And Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, where power is expressed indirectly , by saturating people with so many delightful distractions that they can’t see their oppression. Where people “come to adore the technologies that would undo their capacities to think.”

Soon it will be the turn of my contemporaries. Many even of these old friends are gone. I know, because I attended the funerals, or received the letters, or caught the shocking news by chance. When they die they grow younger in the passages of the mind. Even Rick, Joe’s eldest, killed by a car at the age of twenty-three, trying to save a dog. My precise contemporary, but now I search in my memory for his face and voice, and for a moment find him vividly before me, but reverted to eight or nine. It is as if they perish through birth as well as death, growing ever smaller.
