An essay by einstein the world as i see it

As the child of a military officer, whose job moved us around the world, I was fortunate to live in Central and South America most of my life. I was immersed in the language and environment where I lived and learned to speak Spanish. Because I had the opportunity to live overseas, I found a life full of adventure and culture stimulation. Early in life I learned that our global society was not as large as many people believe. This has turned me into a creative, energetic person who likes to think outside of the box and be a creative problem solver.

However the theory grew so complicated and difficult that Einstein's physical instincts failed him at the crucial moment. In 1913 he published a defective version of the theory. After nearly three years of hesitation and doubt, he was able to repair the theory by writing down the mathematically simplest equations. They were ones he'd nearly adopted three years before. He had then thought them to be inadmissible for physical reasons. The diagnosis of his earlier error was clear. He had mistakenly trusted his physical insight over mathematical simplicity.

In 1920, he became a Foreign Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences . [65] In 1922, he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". [10] While the general theory of relativity was still considered somewhat controversial, the citation also does not treat the cited work as an explanation but merely as a discovery of the law , as the idea of photons was considered outlandish and did not receive universal acceptance until the 1924 derivation of the Planck spectrum by S. N. Bose . Einstein was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (ForMemRS) in 1921 . [4] He also received the Copley Medal from the Royal Society in 1925. [4]

Success would be exciting not because anyone really doubts general relativity, but because confirmed links between the theory and observation can yield powerful new applications. The eclipse measurements of 1919, for example, which established that gravity bends light’s trajectory, have inspired a successful technique now used for finding distant planets. When such planets pass in front of their host stars, they slightly focus the star’s light causing a pattern of brightening and dimming that astronomers can detect. A similar technique has also allowed astronomers to measure the mass of particular galaxies by observing how severely they distort the trajectory of light emitted by yet more distant sources. Another, more familiar example is the global positioning system, which relies on Einstein’s discovery that gravity affects the passage of time. A GPS device determines its location by measuring the travel time of signals received from various orbiting satellites.  Without taking account of gravity’s impact on how time elapses on the satellites, the GPS system would fail to correctly determine the location of an object, including your car or a guided missile.
